I am a temporary ministry specialist. I have served ten churches, three presbyteries, and one synod over the past twenty-five years. While each church posed distinctive challenges, every session expressed the need for quality training. Requests for training are often the result of a perceived need on the part of those in ordered ministries to obtain knowledge and develop skills that will enable them to function more effectively.  However, church leaders have also expressed several reasons for not doing training:

The Maintenance of Divine Worship

One of the primary purposes of the church is “the maintenance of divine worship.”  As we’ve experienced lately, worshipping God can take many forms from blessing animals to dancing in the aisles.  If the way the gospel is presented differs from one worship service to another, why doesn’t the format of our worship service change?  The Worship Committee recently asked me to explain the Presbyterian/Reformed style of worship.

Spring storms and tornadoes have swept across the Midwestern and Southern states, including the most recent June 1 tornadoes in the Springfield area of Massachusetts. The two most visibly devastating tornadoes in Alabama and Joplin, Missouri, have caused more than 430 deaths and the displacement of thousands more. Fourteen states have federal disaster declarations due to tornadoes, storms, or flooding. Communities have suffered damage or destruction to thousands of buildings, including homes, churches, hospitals and businesses.
