Frequently asked questions concerning SHPC and our Worship

Worship begins as the people gather. People greet one another, hear announcements of concern to the congregation, and prepare in prayer or meditation while listening to music.

The service concludes with a formal dismissal. This includes a charge to the people to go into the world in the name of Christ. It always includes words of blessing.

  • An affirmation of faith and commitment through the use of creed and/or a hymn. 
  • Acts of commitment and recognition.
  • The Sacraments of Baptism or the Lord’s Supper. 
  • Baptized believers may be received as members of the church.
  • Ordination and installation of church officers, commissioning for service.
  • Witness to faith and service and interpretation of the mission and programs of the church prepare for prayers of intercession and supplication and offering ourselves and gifts in support of the ministry of Christ.
  • Prayers of intercession and supplication are offered for
  • the Church universal, its ministry and those who minister, that the world might believe;
  • the world, those in distress or special need, and all in authority, that peace and justice might prevail;
  • the nation, the state, local communities, and those who govern in them, that they may know and have strength to do what is right.
  • the local church, that we have the mind of Christ in facing special issues and needs;

  • those in the midst of transitions in life, that they be guided and supported;
  • those who face critical decisions, that they receive wisdom;
  • those who are sick, grieving, lonely, and anxious, that they be comforted and healed;
  • all members, that grace conform them to God’s purpose.
  • The tithes and offerings of God’s people are gathered and received with praise and prayer.  The hymn of praise is called the “doxology” which is a Latin word meaning “praise God.”

  • The children gather at the front of the church to hear a message appropriate for them based on the Scripture reading which will later be interpreted in the sermon.
  • A musical anthem which proclaims or interprets the Scripture lesson or theme is sung by the Chancel Choir.
  • A prayer seeking the illumination, or the gift of understanding, of the Holy Spirit is offered.
  • Scripture lessons are read.
  • The Word of God is interpreted in a sermon

·       The people are called to worship God. Words of Scripture are spoken to proclaim who God is and what God has done.

·       A hymn of adoration and praise is offered.

·       A prayer of confession of the reality of sin in personal and common life follows.

·       In a declaration of pardon, the gospel is proclaimed and forgiveness is declared in the name of Jesus Christ. God’s redemption and God’s claim upon human life are remembered.

·       The people give glory to God, and share the peace of Christ with one another.  This is often called “the Gloria” or “Gloria Patri” which is Latin mean “Glory” or “Glory be to the Father.”
