The office of Deacon, as set forth in Scripture, is one of compassion, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  Deacons minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.  They may pray for the people through prayers of intercession on a regular basis.

At SHPC the role of the Deacons is to transform lives through ministries of compassion.  Their specific goals for 2011 include:

1. Reaching out to support church members and strangers who are in need, ill, lonely, or in distress.
2. Witness to God’s love to the world.

SHPC Deacons are involved in many of our ministries listed elsewhere on our site. Below is a list of the many ministries they are involved with and either the title of the ministry links to another page on our site or a short description is with the name.

2. Meals Ministry
   The SHPC Deacons coordinate and manage the meals delivery program, providing meals for congregants in need due to illness, recuperation, loss, or birth/adoption of a child.  Church family members can volunteer their time to prepare and/or deliver a meal by contacting the church office.
    
3. Card Ministry
   This ministry expresses love, support, sympathy, concern, congratulations, and remembrance on behalf of the Deacons and the congregation through greeting cards.  If you know of someone who is in need of this ministry, please contact the church office.
    
4. Funeral Ministry
   At the time of a death in the congregation, the Deacons coordinate practical assistance to the family. They provide meals to the bereaved family before or after the funeral, host fellowship luncheons after the memorial service, house sit and/or provide child care during the funeral and interment, and transportation to and from local airports and bus stations for out of town family mourners. Church family members who would like to participate in this ministry to provide food or serve at funeral lunches can contact the church office.
    
5. Rides Ministry
   Deacons provide rides to attend church services or church activities for church family members in need. If you have need of this assistance or know someone in our SHPC family who does please contact the Church office for more assistance.
