Committees & Boards

Southern Heights is like any other organization in that there are a number of boards and committees that work to keep our church running smoothly. (Well as smoothly as any organization can be...)

Session

Presbyterian means “governed by elders.”  Our church is not run by a single leader or a group of clergy.  Rather, the congregation of SHPC elects 12 elders called a session for oversight of their congregation.  It means that we have representative government, somewhat like that of the United States.  Unlike the civil government, elders do not made decisions based on the desires of the congregation.  Rather the elders are elected to lead the people according to the will of God as they understand it.  The Presbyterian form of government attempts to resemble the connected Body of Christ.

The Session has six standing committees that members of the session serve on along with other members of our larger church membership.

  1. Financial Stewardship
  2. Life-Long Learning
  3. Membership
  4. Personnel & Administration
  5. Worship
  6. Nominating

Board of Deacons

The Deacons are members of the church who have been tasked with a ministry to serve our membership in all times from celebration to sorrow. Specifically they are tasked to provide:

  1. The growth of our members through a ministry of fellowship and mutual support.
  2. The pastoral care of our congregation through a ministry of sympathy, witness, and service.

Board of Trustees

The Trustees are members of the church who have been tasked with a ministry to provide good stewardship in the management of the our church facility and grounds, and to maintain its real property as a witness to the glory of God.
